However, manual cleaning of equipment is time consuming, cost dearly, and minimize the productive time of the staff working on it. This is where the CIP System (Clean In Place Systems) come to play.
CIP systems are used for dairy, poultry, baking, bulk, topical pharmaceuticals, and other similar applications.
CIP system is a closed system where recirculating solution is applied (often with nozzle) that cleanses, rinses, and sanities equipment without dismantling or disassembly. CIP system is very useful for cleaning of tank, silos, heat exchanges etc.
Until the year 1950, the closed systems had to be dismantled and then cleaned. However, in this method of cleaning the interiors of the equipment in which they do not need to be dismantled, thus saving the time and cost as well as yielding much efficient results.CIP system is based on 4 principles i.e. Time, Temperature, Concentration & mechanical forces.
In Dairy and F&B industries, many type of CIP systems are used on the basis of application single use and reuse or single, double or triple circuit on the basis of capacity of the plant. Fifth Schedule put down by Milk and Milk Products Advisory Board India for General Conditions of Sanitary and hygiene for dairy establishments requires that adequate CIP system should be maintained, in such a way that the CIP solution is circulated to each and every equipment till all equipment and accessories are cleaned up to required standards.
CIP System is composed of Tanks (Acid, Alkali, and Hot Water & Return water), Water Heating System (Heat Exchangers), Forward & Return Pumps, Chemical dosing system, Flow Diversion Valve, Operation PID or PLC based, Instrumentation & Control: Temperature, Flow & Conductivity Transmitter, Turbidity monitor, Data logger/ Chart Recorder etc.
Another advantage of CIP is that it is environment friendly. This system helps in saving water, cleaning chemicals & cleaning time in dairy and food & beverages plant. If CIP is implemented, it helps in decreasing COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) on ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant, thus reducing environmental pollution.
Time – If the cleaning agent is in contact with the surface for the long time, it improves the cleaning capability. Temperature – Higher the temperature, better the dirt removing efficiency. Pressure – Turbulence caused with high pressure used in cleaning systems helps to get the stains off. Alkali Concentration – The concentrated cleaning solution is better for the cleaning as opposed to the diluted one
The flow and pH of final rinse water also plays role in the final result of the cleaning process.
At a time of design of CIP System some points is always considered as Velocity should be in between 1.5 m/s to 3 m/s, adequate flow rate of liquid, Spray ball location- To ensure reach of chemical solution at each part of equipment.
